KUALA KANGSAR: Perak Mentri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has announced a waiver for all compound notices and parking summonses issued by local councils in the state up till Monday.

He also pledged to support all federal government projects planned for Perak "that benefit the rakyat".

The announcement comes on the back of a similar move announced by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last week.

Bernama apologises to Penang CM

PENANG: Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency) has apologised to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for its news story on March 12 which mistakenly quoted Lim as commenting on the May 13 incident.

The apology was contained in a letter dated Saturday and signed by its editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong.

In the letter sent to the Chief Minister’s office and faxed to The Star, Yong said the inclusion of the fact was intended to give background on the establishment of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971.

“Nevertheless, upon a thorough review, the inclusion of that fact along with Lim's quote may have been inappropriate," he said in the letter.

On March 12, Bernama quoted Lim as saying that the NEP, which was introduced in 1971 after the May 13, 1969, racial riots to eradicate poverty and restructure society, was the source of “cronyism, corruption and inefficiency.”

The Chief Minister’s office in a statement urged the media to play their role in reporting facts.

Some 500 Umno members and supporters staged a brief protest outside the Penang state government office in Komtar this afternoon.

The crowd - which gathered there after Friday prayers around 2.30pm - chanted slogans such as 'Don’t sideline the Malays' and 'Do not abolish the NEP'.

Upon being instructed by the police, the crowd dispersed some 15 minutes later. No untoward incidents were reported.

The protest, led by Penang Umno secretary Azhar Ibrahim, to protest Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's declaration that the new DAP-led state government would do away with the New Economic Policy (NEP) policies.

Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan had warned that the gathering in Komtar would be declared illegal and arrests would be made against the protestors.

However, no arrests were made this afternoon.

Short-sighted Penang UMNO

By having such a leader in Penang is proven to be disastered and luckily Penangite rejected them mostly in 12th General Election. Hope Penangite who still support these idiots can know their true faces now. If they (UMNO) think by stopping the federal funding to Penang's mega projects as a way to revenge Penangite who support DAP, PKR & PAS, then they are totally hell wrong! Anyway, Penangite do not want PORR, can't you Datuk Azhar Ibrahim understand the wish of Penangite? And Penang Monorail is under Scomi, your BN President's son!

Time will tell and people will understand why Penangite are lacking behind compared to other states, because we are having these short-sighted BN leaders. Opps, they are NOT qualify as leader anyway!

PENANG: The state Umno will “persuade” the Federal Government to scrap all the mega projects in the state in view of the people’s clear rejection of Barisan Nasional.

Since Penangites do not want development, the Federal Government should not force it on them, said state Umno liaison committee secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim.

He said that this was not Penang Umno taking revenge “but we are actually giving the people what they want”.

“They voted for change, so let us see what the DAP can do,” he said after the party’s emergency meeting at Menara Umno yesterday.

Azhar, who is Penaga assemblyman, was appointed the state Opposition Leader at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Umno liaison committee deputy chief Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdullah hit out at the new administration for its decision not to practise the New Economic Policy (NEP).

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced today that he will hold the industrial development and international trade as well as land affairs and land development portfolios in the state cabinet.

First Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin will be in charge of religious affairs, entrepreneur development and cooperatives, information and social relations.

Second Deputy Chief Minister Dr P. Ramasmy will be responsible for the state’s economic planning, education and human resources, science, technology and innovation, he said in a statement after the swearing-in of the two deputy chief ministers and eight state executive councillors before Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas at Dewan Sri Pinang here today.

Chow Kon Yeow, the Padang Kota assemblyman, holds the local government, traffic management and environment portfolios while Lim Hock Seng (Bagan Jermal) is the state executive councillor in charge of public works, utilities (energy, water and telecoms) and transport (air, sea and rail).

Bukit Tambun assemblyman Law Heng Kiang is responsible for tourism development, culture, arts and heritage while Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Boon Poh holds the health and welfare and caring society portfolios, Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai (housing, town and country planning) and Berapit assemblywoman Ong Kok Foi (youth and sports and women, family and community development).

For the two PKR state excecutive councillors, Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Kassim is given the portfolio on domestic trade and consumer affairs and Bukit Tambun assemblyman Law Choo Kiang (agriculture and agro-based industry, rural development and flood mitigation).

Why PM So Angry?

Why PM so angry on new CM not to practise the New Economic Policy (NEP) in Penang? This might be one of the reasons.

The tender for the Project (Penang Monorail) has been closed since November 16, 2007. Some of the contenders for the project is Melewar Industrial Group Bhd (MIG) and Putera Capital Bhd.

On January 10, 2008, the government announced the winner of the tender, which is a consortium led by Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd. (MRCB) The members of the consortium includes Scomi Engineering Bhd and Penang Port Commission. According to the Edge, a Malaysian business newspaper, Malaysian Resources Corporation will build the monorail infrastructure, while Scomi Engineering will provide consultant expertise in building the infrastructure and Penang Port Commission have the land on to which the main hub will operate. The tender costs is expected to be at MYR 1.6 billion. MRCB also operated a join venture with Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Bhd to build the inter-modal transportation hub called Penang Sentral. The Letter of Intent was awarded to MRCB and Penang Port by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd on January 15 2008, although the final solution of the lines and station is not out yet.

Sime Darby Bhd, Malaysia’s biggest listed company, is primarily the promoter of NCER and the company that drew up a masterplan to develop the four states. Part of the plan is the construction of a monorail in Penang island, where a letter of intent has already been issued to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB).

MRCB has teamed up with Scomi Group Bhd and Penang Port Sdn Bhd to build the RM1 billion project. So far, the companies have only been doing the ground work and not initiated actual construction.

Scomi, especially will come under the spotlight, as it is 34.5% controlled by two privately held companies, On Stream Marine Sdn Bhd and Kaspadu Sdn Bhd which are the vehicles of Datuk Kamaluddin Abdullah, the son of Premier Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

End of the day, only the rich will become richer, then how about the average Malays and all Malaysian? Think yourself, my friends.
